Feedback from the first HIE workshop by HDR UK shows it was highly appreciated by participants, giving them a host of valuable news skills and insights in a key area of health data research.
Led by subject experts Dr Iliada Eleftheriou, Lecturer in Healthcare Sciences, and Dr Alan Davies Senior Lecturer in Healthcare Sciences – both from the University of Manchester – the three-day event was fully subscribed with around 30 people taking part from across the UK.
Participant feedback showed that participants felt they had benefited from learning more about Agile methodology, Python, version control, data security and encryption – gaining invaluable experience managing data and getting to grips with the latest software engineering techniques.
Comments included “really valuable”, “Brilliant effort”, “one of the most enjoyable courses I have done” and “this is a really worthwhile and extremely useful course which I thoroughly recommend”.
The workshop was also piloted a collaborative approach to training between HDR UK and AphA (the Association of Professional Healthcare Analysts) whose members were able to take part for free.
Sarah Cadman, HDR UK Director of Talent and Training, said:
“This was a superb event which underlined the benefits of collaboration between different organisations committed to advancing health data research in the four nations of the UK. The feedback from participants was hugely positive and the event points the way forward for our training and learning initiatives in 2022 and beyond. We also see HIE as a very important aspect of health data research and have developed a curriculum of bite-sized videos, introduced by Iliada and Alan, that people can see for free on our HDR UK virtual learning platform.”
Course co-leader Dr Iliada Eleftheriou, Lecturer in Healthcare Sciences, added:
“It was a great pleasure delivering this workshop to health practitioners from a variety of backgrounds and roles, and seeing them come together and collaborate towards applying information engineering tools and techniques in practice. It is a topic that has begun to attract attention in health settings and will be the backbone of digitalisation and AI implementation.”
