Steven’s first experience in health data research was when he started a post graduate diploma studentship in health research methods to study causality using Mendellian Randomization at KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme. This sparked his interest more into health research and went on to study missing data and multilevel data modelling in routine health data for his master’s project.
Steven has an interest in application of risk prediction and multistate modelling techniques to electronic healthcare records (EHRs) to develop and update models for predicting future risk of various health conditions with particular interest in cardiometabolic-renal conditions in women who have been pregnant.
During his time in the programme, Steven looks forward to learning and apply risk prediction and multistate modelling techniques to understand the dynamic progression and care trajectories where multiple conditions occur within the same patient overtime. He is also interested in evaluating algorithmic biases to ensure decisions made based on risk prediction models are fair, transparent, and equitable, promoting trust and improving outcomes for patient benefit. He is also interested in causal inference techniques and exploring deep learning frameworks for modelling survival data. Steven also has interest in applying pharmacoepidemiologic methods to understand medication safety and effectiveness with a particular interest in pregnancy research because pregnant women are often excluded from clinical trials, leading to a significant gap in knowledge about the safety and effectiveness of many medications during pregnancy. He believes these are important and timely research problems which would provide creative solutions that would improve the health and wellbeing of patients.
Steven’s background
Prior to joining the programme, he worked as a Statistician at KEMRI-Wellcome Trust, where he modelled routine hospital data using time-series techniques. He has a BSc Economics and Statistics from Chuka University, PGD in Health Research Methods from Pwani University & KEMRI-Wellcome Trust, MSc Biostatistics from University of Nairobi and a professional certification in Data science from International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). Steven enjoys cycling, swimming and hiking in his free time.
