Professor Ara Darzi's headshot.Professor Ara Darzi has stepped down as a member of HDR UK’s Board of Trustees due to other commitments. He will continue to support the Chair, the Board and the wider Senior Leadership Team in his new role as Special Advisor, providing expert advice and guidance, bringing a fresh perspective to the Institute and challenging ideas.

Ara joined the Board in 2022 and has been vital in facilitating HDR UK’s transition into our new, ambitious strategy during the Institute’s move into its second five years.

Professor Darzi is Co-Director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London and holds the Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery. He is a Consultant Surgeon at Imperial College NHS Trust and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society and, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering

In 2002, Professor Darzi was knighted for his services to medicine and surgery, and in 2007 he was introduced as Lord Darzi of Denham to the UK’s House of Lords as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health. He has been a member of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council since 2009 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 2016.
