Europe and the European Health Data Space
We collaborate with European partners to support UK engagement and alignment with the European Health Data Space (EHDS).
HDR UK has strong partnerships and collaborations with our counterpart organisations in the European Union (EU), and the Institute seeks to enable the UK’s engagement and alignment with the European Health Data Space. This is a major health data initiative being rolled out across the EU that aims to give individuals easier access to and control over their health data across borders, while enabling trustworthy use of health data for research across 27 countries and 450 million people.
European Health Data Space (EHDS)
The following articles and keynote address set out the significance of the European Health Data Space for international health data research, and the importance of UK alignment.

Why UK alignment with the European Health Data Space matters now
As the EU develops the European Health Data Space, Anne Wozencraft shares how the UK has an opportunity to align with new standards and maintain strong cross-border research.

European Health Data Space: UK alignment as a strategic priority
Why continued UK alignment with the EHDS could reduce barriers to international research, support innovation and help improve health outcomes.

EHDS Unpacked
Understanding Patient Data’s two-part webinar series explores what the EHDS means for the UK and international lessons on building trusted health data systems and cross-border collaboration.
There have been three public consultations on draft guidelines and technical specifications for the European Health Data Space. These have not been restricted to organisations in the European Union, and HDR UK has given responses to key guidelines under each public consultation to share learnings and work towards common approaches, technical specifications and standards that will best enable international health data research collaboration.
