Timothy completed a BSc in biological sciences at the University of Bristol, graduating with a first-class degree and a growing interest in statistical genomics. His dissertation used genome-wide analysis to detect introgression and signatures of selection in Scottish wildcats, and this summer he worked as a research assistant in Bristol’s School of Mathematics, applying diffusion approximation methods to infer demographics of the same species.

These experiences showed Timothy how statistical and computational tools can answer real biological questions and drew him towards health data science. He is extremely motivated to work on coeliac disease, a condition that runs in his family and affects close friends, and he’s grateful to be continuing this focus with support from Coeliac UK.

Timothy is excited to be studying an MSc in bioinformatics at Bristol. For his dissertation, he hopes to build on recent work using neural-network-based simulation-based inference methods, to model coeliac disease demographics more efficiently and accurately. Looking ahead, he plans to pursue a PhD in genomic medicine, working towards a research career in statistical genetics.
