Chief Technical Officers, Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science at Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science

Seb Bacon is the Chief Technical Officer at the Bennett Institute, University of Oxford, leading data initiatives for NHS England and other stakeholders in healthcare and other sectors since 2016, with a focus on using rich, privacy-sensitive datasets to create open science systems and platforms for public benefit. He conceived and designed OpenSAFELY, an open source platform which takes a groundbreaking, privacy-respecting approach to clinical big data analytics and epidemiological research.

His research interests include the systematic application of open-first software engineering principles in academia, and the application of data-driven approaches to healthcare software optimisation.

Prior to this, Seb was Chief Technical Officer at OpenCorporates the world's largest open company database, whose mission is to fight corruption, uphold democracy, and create a trusted business environment.

His consulting work in digital transformation spans diverse sectors from education to civic activism. He founded the charity Democracy Club in 2010 to enhance democratic engagement.
