Professor Sara Thomas originally trained as a doctor and then as an epidemiologist. She joined the School in 1996 and has worked on a range of research topics focusing on infections and vaccines.
Sara teaches on a number of courses at the School, and is a tutor for MSc Epidemiology. She is also the Programme Content Director for MSc Epidemiology (Distance Learning).
Sara has worked on a variety of infectious disease and immunoepidemiology topics, including the epidemiology of varicella zoster virus, acute infections as triggers for cardiovascular events and the burden and outcomes of autoimmune disorders. More recent work has focused on the use of linked electronic health records to investigate the epidemiology of infections and vaccines, and she leads the Electronic Health Records Theme of the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Immunisation. Other research interests include systematic reviews and methodological aspects of correlates of vaccine-induced protection.
