Matt joined NHS England in June 2024 to facilitate the planning, delivery and interpretation of clinical trials through better use of healthcare systems data. While a small number of clinical trials have used NHS data effectively, including some high-profile and high-impact trials, there’s a huge and untapped potential for more trials to benefit from the power of NHS Data. As part of his role in the Senior Leadership Team at NHSE Transformation Directorate’s Data For R&D, Matt is working to address these challenges.

Previously, Matt was a statistician, trialist and methodologist at MRC Clinical Trials Unit; Associate Director of Data-Enabled Trials at the BHF Data Science Centre; and co-Research Director of HDR UK’s Transforming Data for Trials theme. Matt has extensive experience in trial oversight and evaluation through serving on, and running courses on, Data Monitoring Committees (IDMCs/DSMBs/DMECs) and Trials Steering Committees, and service on funding panels and ethics committees.

In late 2024 Matt was selected to be among the first Honorary Fellows of HDR UK, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Institute.
