Olamide is a third year MSci undergraduate student at the University of Nottingham studying a degree in biotechnology, and will be starting her integrated master’s year this autumn. Throughout this year, she has been working on a university project with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

They have been formulating an AI-powered microscopy tool that can potentially identify cancer at the single-cell stage, whilst also improving the efficiency of the palpation procedure that is performed by clinicians. Fundamentally, biotechnology encompasses innovation and scientific creativity to solve the most pressing global issues. This pursuit of innovation led her to attend a health equity hackathon event last summer hosted by MSD and Eli Lilly, two of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies.

During this experience, Olamide had the opportunity to gain an understanding of health equity. She is keen to start her internship not only because of the invaluable technical skills that she will obtain but because of their mission to achieve health equity in public health. She wants to gain exposure to the intersection of healthcare and data science to contribute to meaningful research.
