Julia Shumway is a PhD student and research assistant at the University College London Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. The aim of her PhD is to understand the impact of placement in mainstream versus special secondary school on the health and educational outcomes of adolescents with Down Syndrome, using data from the Educational and Child Health Insights from Linked Data (ECHILD) project. Toward this end, her prior work has described the emergence of chronic health conditions among children with Down syndrome and patterns in primary school enrolment and socioeconomic deprivation for children with Down syndrome.

Julia’s current research focuses on health and educational trajectories and outcomes for secondary school children with any neurodisability, including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and autism spectrum disorders.

Julia has worked to ground her work in public involvement and engagement, ensuring that those effected by her research are consulted about research at all steps of the research cycle.
