Hans-Erik G. Aronson joined HDR UK in July 2021 as National Digital Research Infrastructure Director.  In this role, he is leading the UKRI Data and Analytics Research Environments (DARE) programme, creating the next generation of Trusted Research Environments (TREs) to enable efficient sharing, linkage, and advanced analysis of data to advance critical research.

Hans-Erik joined HDR UK from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York, where he served as Vice President, Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, and led all IT functions since 2007.  His tenure at CSHL coincided with a period of unprecedented growth in computational demands, during which he provided overarching strategic leadership, technical planning, and organizational management, including the selection and implementation of large-scale research computing systems in support of numerous high-throughput, data-driven initiatives, notably in genomics, brain imaging, and cryo-electron microscopy.

As member of Executive Administrative Committee, he worked closely with research and administrative leaders across the institution to make sure that IT operations and strategic planning aligned with the institutional mission and evolving requirements.   In his role of CIO, he oversaw risk management associated with all data, including restricted and sensitive research/clinical datasets, and worked closely with the Board of Directors on cybersecurity and related matters.

Hans-Erik joined CSHL from Columbia University where he spent much of his earlier career, including time in the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.  He has over 30 years of experience in academic research computing.  He served as Vice President of the Association of Independent Research Institutes from 2014 – 2019 and as Board member from 2013 – 2019.  Born in Sweden, he moved to the United States to study and complete post-graduate research, after first fulfilling his military service requirements.
