Euan is a neurological physiotherapist, graduating from Oxford Brookes University in 2019. Through six years of clinical work, he became interested in health data and epidemiology after encountering difficult questions from patients and families about recovery following severe stroke. Families often want to understand whether their relative might regain meaningful abilities, such as sitting independently, standing or walking. While clinical experience can indicate whether an outcome is more or less likely, it can be difficult to quantify that uncertainty or explain how recovery may differ between individuals. This sparked his interest in whether health data could provide more individualised, evidence-informed predictions of recovery.
As an HDR UK master’s scholar in partnership with the Stroke Association, Euan is studying for an MSc in epidemiology at the University of Bristol. He hopes to develop stronger statistical and quantitative research skills, with particular interests in prognostic modelling to understand functional recovery trajectories.
In the longer term, Euan hopes to pursue a clinical academic career and doctoral-level study, strengthening the evidence base for physiotherapy-led interventions and developing prognostic models that support clinical decision-making and rehabilitation aligned with patients’ individual needs and goals.
