Research Software Engineer, University of Exeter

Dr Liam Berrisford, FHEA is a Research Software Engineer at the University of Exeter with experience teaching computer science, programming, data science, and research software engineering. He has worked as an Associate Lecturer in Computer Science, leading and co-leading modules in data science and software engineering, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects, and supporting students through lectures, labs, assessment, and project work. Liam has also designed and delivered technical training in areas including Python, Julia, GPU programming, reproducible research, and efficient programming, with a focus on making technical education accessible, inclusive, and practically useful.

Alongside his teaching work, Liam has contributed to a range of research software and high-performance computing projects. These include optimisation work on the Met Office’s LFRic atmospheric model, GPU benchmarking and portability work with OpenFOAM, enabling LFRic and related workflows on Isambard-3, and developing open training infrastructure for Coding for Reproducible Research. He has also worked on software and dashboard projects involving environmental data, air quality modelling, and behavioural change analytics, giving him practical experience translating complex technical work into usable tools, workflows, and training materials.
