Abdulrahman graduated last year from Durham university with a BSc in physics where he was involved in a project developing a smart lightbox for the South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Trust in his final year. For this endeavour, they built a device that quantified how well someone had washed their hands to a degree of accuracy within 1%, helping assist hand washing training and practice within the trust.
The impact this project could potentially have and the level of enjoyment that came from it drew Abdul to the world of health data and research using computational techniques, ultimately spurring him to apply for the HDR UK Black Internship scheme!
Over the course of Abdulrahman’s degree and other activities, he built a robust skillset which includes programming in Python and R, and mathematical and statistical modeling. He is excited to build on these skills, and pick up others, over the course of this internship, potentially springboarding a career in health data science!
