Secure Data Environments (SDEs) are transforming how health and care data is accessed for research and planning across England. These secure platforms ensure data remains protected, while enabling approved users to analyse it within a controlled environment.

The NHS Research SDE Network – made up of NHS England and 11 regional teams – is establishing a consistent, federated approach to data access, covering the whole of England.  The North West, North East and North Cumbria, and Yorkshire and Humber are collaborating on pilot projects to enable cross-regional data use and are here together at the HDR UK Conference.

This shift from data sharing to secure data access is central to improving patient care, planning services, enabling innovation, and saving lives. SDEs allow integration of diverse data sources – from imaging to GP and hospital records – and support a wide range of research, from AI development to real-world studies.

Researchers can explore datasets and apply for access through the Health Data Research UK Gateway.

Crucially, the programme prioritises public trust, with strong patient and public involvement, clear public benefit, and robust privacy and security safeguards. By placing secure data access at the heart of NHS data strategy, the SDE Network is building the foundations for a more responsive, innovative, and evidence-led health and care system.
