Jonathan Montgomery awarded knighthood in New Years Honours
29 December 2018
Health Data Research UK’s non Executive Director Professor Jonathan Montgomery has been awarded a knighthood in the New Years Honours for services to bioethics and healthcare law.
Professor Sir Jonathan has served on Health Data Research UK’s Board since it was established in 2017 and is the founding Chair of the Health Research Authority.
Sir Jonathan has previously served as Chair of the Human Genetics Commission, the Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. He is currently Professor of Healthcare Law at UCL and a member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies. He will be taking up the role of Chair of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2019 following the retirement of Dame Fiona Caldicott.
Sir Jonathan is committed to ensuring that data science is fully deployed to the benefit of NHS patients and with public support. He was co-author on a chapter in the Chief Medical Officer’s report Generation Genome on the need for a new ‘Ethics and the Social Contract for Genomics in the NHS’.
Professor Andrew Morris, Director of Health Data Research UK, said:
“It is terrific to see Jonathan recognised for this outstanding contribution to health care law and bioethics, which has had a positive global impact at a time when trust and effective governance is being eroded. We at HDR UK are incredibly fortunate to benefit from his insight and counsel.”
