Cathie Sudlow, a long-standing member of the senior HDR UK team has been chosen for a profile piece in The Lancet – one of the world’s most prestigious medical journals.
The profile charts her career from medical student to Chief Scientist of UK Biobank, Professor of Neurology and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, and now Director of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Data Science Centre, led by HDR UK.
Cathie is the inaugural Director of the BHF Data Science Centre, a partnership between the BHF and HDR UK set up to advance scientific research into diseases of the heart and circulation using large scale data and analytics.
Andrew Morris, Director of HDR UK, praises Cathie’s approach to health data research in the piece, saying, “Besides her deep scientific knowledge, she has an interest in how one assembles data and services to benefit the national and global research community.”
Nilesh Samani, Medical Director of the BHF, highlights her ability to get things done. “She’s already had a real impact by being able to build, for example, the first trusted research environment in partnership with NHS Digital. She’s brought together linked data on 55 million people in the UK. She’s done a remarkable job,” he says.
Throughout the interview, Cathie reflects on the importance of data – the ‘lifeblood of all science’ – and discusses her views on the huge and exciting opportunities that data science offers for advancing healthcare.
