Purpose of the post

HDR UK requires the services of an experienced senior front end developer to work on the next stage of its flagship Innovation Gateway ( www.healthdatagateway.org) and associated software services. The Innovation Gateway was first released in May 2020 and provides a key resource to discover and access health data resources for researchers and data custodians.  Its primary function is providing visibility to and supporting access requests for data sets by researchers in the UK and around the globe to health data that can support them in their quest to deliver scientific insights, that improve health and healthcare of the UK and worldwide populations.

The Gateway today holds information on over 750 data sets which researchers can securely request access to and is supported by over 60 data custodians across the UK and the globe.

These data sets have supported the publication of over 2,000 impactful papers at the cutting edge of scientific and medical discoveries.

The Gateway has been a critical deliverable in HDR UK’s first quinquennium (5 years) and we are really looking to scale up as we look forward into the future to support 1,000’s of researchers on a global basis discovery and gain access to data in a trustworthy and secure fashion, enabling discoveries that improve people’s lives.

The successful candidate will be expected to work within the Gateway agile software development team, providing development leadership and hands on implementation of key functionality and new concepts, primarily focused on the front-end aspects of the product.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Leadership of front-end software development for a single scrum team
  • Implementation across front end aspects of HDR’s Innovation Gateway including: Search, Content Management, Visualisations and Integrations
  • Working with Solution Architect and Head of Development on new technology concepts
  • Working to an agile methodology, with fortnightly sprint deliveries
  • Documentation of code and solutions
  • Team work expectations
    • Working with the Scrum Master, Product Owner, Business Analysts and Testing Lead as part of the leadership team
    • Collaboration with senior HDR UK members, technology teams and external technical partners, standards bodies

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential:

  • 5+ years software development experience in a senior role
  • 2+ years experience working with React (JavaScript)
  • 2+ years experience in any testing framework
  • 2+ years experience working with Git
  • Experience consuming API’s
  • Working in an Agile / SCRUM team environment
  • Proficient understanding of web markup, including HTML5, CSS3
  • Basic understanding of server-side CSS pre-processing platforms, such as LESS and SASS
  • UI/UX design
  • Proficient in English

Desirable:

  • MongoDB knowledge
  • Experience using Cypress and/or Jest test frameworks
  • Experience working with d3.js, cytoscape.js, graphQL, express.js
  • Experience using Confluence, JIRA, Trello and similar Agile project management tools
  • An understanding of research delivery within the public sector, academia and/or industry
  • Cloud computing platform skills (preferably GCP)
  • Good understanding of SEO principles and ensuring applications adhere to them
  • Full stack development expertise
