Background
It is unusual to proactively advertise failure. And it is easy to see why. The rewards for doing so are rare and small – especially when compared to the rewards of sharing success. So much of life – personal and professional – is spent exchanging stories that end well.
And yet, viewed from the perspective of learning and improving, this is a terrible shame. Arguably, we learn more from failure. Improvements in health and safety will owe more to examples of things going wrong than things going to plan; not replicating past failures is a well-paved route to better futures; and working out what to avoid doing is often easier than knowing what you should do.
This event – run jointly by the HDR UK Midlands, Strategy Unit, and the Midlands Analyst Network event – therefore celebrates and invites the sharing of failure!
The event will examine and question the very notion of ‘failure’. Exploring the ways that individual ‘failure’ adds up to collective success, will make a positive case for sharing negative stories.
It will also create the space for people to share their failures for others to learn from – celebrating them for doing so and encouraging others to follow.
It will end in learning. Having explored the value in failure, what could be done to make the most of it: as individuals, as teams, as organisations, and as professions. How can we make the most of things not working as planned?
