Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) forms partnerships with industry where these can take forward the Institute’s mission, vision and objectives.

Some industry partners contribute to accelerating trustworthy data use. Others may help improve people’s lives with research towards new treatments.

The way we work with industry must deliver benefits to patients and the public in deeper understanding of disease, better treatments and provision of better care. That is how we will retain trust in the use of data and return value to society.

Our approach

HDR UK has worked successfully with multiple industry partners since it was established.

We are now developing a more strategic approach to our partnerships with industry.

This is because developing strong relationships with industry can help both partners remain at the forefront of cutting-edge discoveries and innovation.

From pharmaceutical companies to digital health firms and software providers, industry endeavours to find solutions to complex health challenges. They require access to the knowledge, expertise and tools to do so, and our researchers, scientists and technologists can learn much in return.

Our principles

Working with commercial organisations can raise important questions about trust, transparency and alignment with our values.

All potential partnerships are rigorously evaluated and must clearly align with our mission and conform to our ethical assessment policy.

We will co-develop our ‘principles for industry partnership’ with our Public Advisory Board. Any potential industry partnership must then align with these principles.

The BHF Data Science Centre at HDR UK already has a set of such principles

Entering into partnerships

We will consult our Public Advisory Board in the early stages of partnership discussions with a potential industry collaborator. Our Board has oversight and full decision-making control over all partnerships with industry.
